Did you know that Americans throw away about 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve? It is not that hard to make sustainable holiday choices while decorating, traveling, sending cards, or even choosing and wrapping your holiday gifts. When you save energy and resources, you are choosing to protect the environment, to safeguard life, now and for the future.

JENRON DESIGNS Green Ideas for the Holidays:

Use LED lights that you can use for years to come; make the most energy efficient choice. Safety and energy-efficiency should always be considered first.
I really love decorating for the holidays, and lately I have started to make the conscience decision to slowly integrate LED lights into our holiday lighting. I will admit, I was not a fan of the original LED holiday lights when they first came out. I was very unimpressed with the color value they provided; which was very stark, with a ton of cool blue undertones, not the traditional warm white holiday lights I grew up loving. As advancements have been made in the technology, I now find that the warm white LEDs rival that of the traditional white incandescents. As you can see, with my newest tree below.
LED lights are also safer for pets and children, since they are usually low voltage. Plus, they do not heat up like the traditional lights, so they are unlikely to catch fire on dry live holiday trees or popular flocked trees. I also have found that LED’s last up to 10x longer; which also means less glass and metal going into a landfill, not to mention all the money they will save you on your energy bill.

THE BEST WARM WHITE LED LIGHTS & OTHER FUN LEDS:

Decorate creatively and inexpensively with natural materials from your yard or with items you already own.
Everyone knows that I rotate my holiday picks and recycle my ribbons from tree to tree in different combinations to create new looks each year. The red snowflake ribbon shown below was utilized on an outdoor wreaths for the last 2 Christmas seasons. While it is still in good shape, we brought it back inside to our Nostalgic Woodland Tree use in our private bedroom. This process makes my trees appear different every year; while being cost effective by recycling the ribbon.

Wrap Smarter, and Recycle Your Gift Bags
I think we all recycle pretty gift bags and ribbon bows that we receive. The ribbon is so easy to roll it back up and save it for next year unlike the sticky bows of years past. This is yet another great way to save on waste going to the landfill. Also you can get creative with your gift wrapping, maybe use a scarf as the tissue paper which is also a gift for the recipient. A leftover paper towel tube works great for those hard to wrap small items and can double and holiday poppers. I have also been known to cut up paper bags to wrap gifts with for some rustic charm. I also know a lot parents that have started to use, reusable Santa sacks, that are left out under the tree for Santa Claus to fill up on Christmas Eve. However, as a child I seem to remember Santa never wrapped any of my gifts, but since I was the only child in my household I guess there was no confusion on who got what on Christmas morning.

Buy a living tree you can plant outside or keep as a houseplant after the holidays.
While celebrating our first Christmas in our home, we purchased a dozen small live trees to decorate with throughout the house. Since we had no landscaping in our backyard at the time they were planted after the holidays were over.
We planted all of our little Italian Pines, to be used as a naturalized buffer between our yard and the woodland creekside directly behind our home. As you can see in the past 3 years these little table top trees have grown about 2-3 feet tall.
So, how do you go Green for the holidays?
Something really cool is that Arhaus has partnered with the American Forest Foundation to plant more trees in our depleted forests. Love these suggestions for an environmentally friendly Christmas! You’re right – there’s SO much waste that goes on around the holidays. It’s definitely made me more conscious about what we consume, and how.

We’re cramped for space, so I stopped putting up a tree several years back. We sometimes cut greenery from living evergreens to bring indoors. Or we’ll make a Yule log or set up decorations that can be used over and over. One final thing I like to do is to decorate a tree outside with things like cranberry strings and orange bird feeders, that the birds and other wildlife can enjoy 🙂
I love the planting a tree outside suggestion! Such a great idea. I grew up chopping down our family Christmas tree. As an adult, I have been more inclined to put up a fake tree because I can put it up whenever I wish. Plus they are way easier to “clean up” after. No needles. But the planting a tree outside is such a lovely way to give back, esp after all those years of cutting them down. Thank you for sharing!
We recycle bows and gift bags from year to year! It saves a lot of waste and a little money too! 🙂
We switched to a phony prelim tree a couple years back. I miss the smell but I like that we’re saving trees. We also try to reuse a lot of gift wrapping/ bags/ etc so that stuff doesn’t go to landfill. I love the mission of Arhaus, thanks for sharing it.

I am so glad the led lights came out in a warmer white, they are perfect for the tree now :). We reuse gift bags and bows until they are no longer presentable…our girls even bring home unwrapped gifts to use what we have rather than buying excess wrapping supplies.
I’m alway re-using wrapping paper and gift bags. I love the smell of real fir. But we switched to a fake one when I was a kid too.

I love the idea of Santa sack for the kiddos. I have several friends that do that too. Pretty drawstring sacks with each childs name embroidered on the front. Plus is saves Santa Claus from having to bring really big gifts that would not fit in his sled. 😉
I love your tree such a warm white light that does not look at all like the bluey LED I have seen. You have opened my eyes to revisit LED again I guess they are starting to make a better product now.
This is a great post with plenty of options for people to help cut the percentage a little bit. I like you idea of slow integrating in the LED lights, I mean if you are replacing your light each year as they go out just opt fo the LED versions and they will even last longer.

Here in CO we do put a big emphasis on the environment or at least our local area does, cannot speak for the whole state. We also have a few rules on foresting and tree removals, with several program that focus on builders and they clear cutting that happens. Glad to see we are getting some heavy hitter on board to to support the American Forestry Foundation and all the work they do. Thank you.

Great post and so many tips to used. I know we have the Santa bags and reuse our ribbon a lot. We are also starting to get the led light as well. I will add more after the holidays, when I get the sale prices.

The American Forestry foundation does wonderful work. I used to volunteer with them and through the Boy Scouts to help them plant tress, it also taught our guys a lot of the environment and how important it is to give back. Thanks for the support!

You are right, I have always reused my gift bags but not the tissue paper I always use fresh tissue. I have not ever used real ribbon on packages before, just string or twine which are both renewable. I love the idea of wrapping up a present like a book inside a scarf to save the paper. That is just genius.
I have been on a committee that volunteers to plants these trees, and I find the event very gratifying. I might be a little sore after planting all those trees but I know my kids, kids can drive that space and say grandpa planted those trees, and that is all I ask for.
Joe, my father planted trees with his boy scout troop, just like this. I assure every time we go by the airfare base, we all say dad planted those trees or grandpa planted all of those. The memory still lives on. 🙂 Merry Christmas

The mere fact that you reuse you ribbon on your trees makes me so happy. I read your comment above on how you store the ribbon, which is an even better tip your should add that in or do post season storage article. We would love that.

I am in love with all your trees. How many do you have? I counted 3 in this post alone. Which says to me you clearly hang on to them for a while. I read that if you keep them for 7-10 years if off sets the pollution it takes to create them which means you are doing you your part, save live trees and keeping your artificial ones for a long time.
Reading you blog always makes me happy, however this article madam a little sad. To know that we are wasting that much around such a happy time of year really bothers me. I am happy to join you as part of the solution. Thanks !
Oh my I did not know that LED where safer for pets that is a game changer for sure. Thank you for explaining that they are low voltage, I guess I never though about it.

Hi Sharice thanks for stopping by my blog. The trick to the ribbon is I roll up all my ribbon as you would buy it in the store and secure it with a paper clip to keep it from unraveling. Yes we have a fairly large back yard, that backs up to a natural creek and green space, where tree are not allowed to be cut, unless damaged or dead.

They are both the Color Changing LED trees 7 1/2 ft tall. One is flocked while the other is not. I wish you the best luck scoring one on sale, you know how I love a deal!!!!
Hi Michelle Lynn to answer your question I have 5 full sized trees and 7 mini trees for a grand total of 12 trees in the Gainer house. All artificial and yes we do keep them for a while. Thank you for stopping by 🙂

Great article and it made me take stock in what I had done this holiday season. I decide instead of trashing everything just to get my sanity back I recycled a few bags and ribbon and I found the Santa sacks for next year. My babies are still little so we have time to implement them in to tradition.

Our family likes to go camping and really enjoy our national park and beautiful wooded areas, this is a gray project supporting the maintenance and up keep of the areas. With projects such as these all the future generations will be able to continue to enjoy this tradition.

We are always rescuing our gift bags too! How funny I am glad we are not alone. My husband makes me feel cheap when I do it but keeping them on hand has saved me so many times when I am in a pinch.
LED light are really the way of the future, I am glad to see you promoting them. Before long you will have have a hard time any kind of incandescent since they stopping making them.
Back home we always reused everything from the holidays, ornaments were passed down from generation to generation, but since I moved to the US I have noticed a lot more waste. Family buying trees a decor then tossing all out at the end of the season. Glad you are trying to change things.

As a golfer I can not begin to tell you how important trees are to some of my favorite courses. Obviously not in the greenway but the build the landscapes around it. The course is one of my favorite places on earth, so I support any green initiative that is available.
