Framing Sentimental Artwork

I wanted to share a post about the importance of Framing Sentimental Artwork, and share my tips for persevering those priceless memories. Plus one lucky reader won a set of my custom frames!

This season for the One Room Challenge I will be upgrading my Master Closet, and while doing so I wanted to take the opportunity to frame some one of kind art.  I believe framing sentimental artwork is even more important than a basic framing job, because the contents hold a memory or in most cases is irreplaceable. This means that your framing and glass should be of the utmost quality to preserve the contents of your framed piece.

* Please note that was compensated for this post and. These involve no extra cost to you, but may result in me receiving a small commission – for which I am very grateful! You can view my full advertising disclosure here. I recently came across my mother’s old sketch pad, circa 1951 by the dated drawings. My late mother, had a hidden talent for drawing and this sketch pad contained some very early drawings that she produced during her high school years. Since the sketches are from the the 1950’s a lot of her sketches were based on fashion during that time. She drew fashion pictures that were very commonly seen in the magazines of that time period for advertising of products. A few of her drawings are even water colored in that style as well, although most of them are basic charcoal sketches. To me theses drawing are irreplaceable and are like an amazing piece of history that could never be duplicated in the same way. I just knew that these beautiful early pieces, on basic notebook paper, needed to be framed and preservation was of the utmost importance to me. I was very lucky to be able to commision custom frame sizes and mattes from my friends up at Art to Frames. I was recently introduced to Art to Frames, a custom framing company located in Brooklyn, New York last year. I admit, I was a bit skeptical on how I would be able to create a one of a kind frame to match my home when their company was located in New York. That is the beauty of their company, you can do everything via the internet; even order samples of frames and mattes if you need them. However, the online colors are so clear that I did not even need too.I selected preservation quilty mats and protective UV blocking glass for all the of these frames. Art to Frames offer over 300 frame choices with styles ranging from modern to rustic and everything in between, so you can find everything you are looking for at one site. They also offers quality products with over 60 mat colors, all with PH Neutral or Acid-Free and custom cuts like V-Groove and Fancy corner shape mats; which give your finished product a one of a kind custom look. I picked some really pretty Dark Walnut Bamboo Frames. Since these are going in my master closet I went with the dark walnut bamboo frame, to match my existing built in shelves and cabinets. They have a lovely red cherry wood undertones so they would also look get with any cherry wood accents as well. The ordering process is super simple and stream lined with Art to Frames. You can basically measure your art or print size and design from there. They do all the figuring for the mat boards and the finished frame size. The best part is, I designed all of this from the comfort of my own home, and the shipping was super quick. Art to Frames provides you hardware hanging options for each of your frames as well. I selected the easy hang kits that I am previously familiar with from my last order. The easy hang kits really did make the hanging process super simple and very quick.  They include an attachable level so your picture always ends up being straight, which is preferable, so you get the right installation every time. You can see more about how I hung them in my previous post The Art of A Frame, Frame Your Name, since these will not be installed for another month. Once I placed my order the shipment arrived within the week. As you can see the frames came nicely packaged and were extremely well wrapped. They pay so much attention to details, and so do I which is why I would recommend them to anyone. Unfortunately, even with the perfect packaging my shipment did arrive with a piece of broken glass and a busted corner on one of my frames. I am only mentioning this because what happened next. Honestly it is was truly amazing and what I consider some of the best customer service out there. When I called Art to Frames they were completely apologetic, even though it was not there fault at all. I think the box was dropped in shipping by looking at the corner of the damaged frame. That was not a problem at all. Art to Frames resent an entire brand new order,  even for the pieces that were not damaged, WOW! Talk about amazing customer service, well this is it folks. Plus I still received my replacement order in only two days, which it so fast. Art to Frames apparently put a rush on my replacement order as well. When my next order arrived, everything was perfect, as it always has been in the past, proving that accidents happens sometimes.  Now we were ready to start framing and all I have to do is add my sentimental prints into my gorgeous new frames.   Designer Tip:  One tip I want to share is always clean the inside of your glass first. I prefer the  Sprayway brand of glass cleaner. Why?  Well, after replacing several fogged windows in our previous home, I asked my window installer how I could prevent it from happening again.  They recommended to never use Windex, or any ammonia  based cleaner because it warps the seal of the windows. I had no idea, have you ever heard of that? So basically, I ruined my own windows by cleaning them with the wrong kind of cleaner, sold specifically to clean windows and glass. Who knew?It even works on my Acrylite plexi glass, which was required for the longer triple frame. Unfortunately this is the one frame that was smashed from the shipping drop, however the plexi glass, was all good, and completely unharmed. You can see below that this material has a 30 year no yellowing  guarantee. Even though most of my mom’s sketches are already yellowed with age this will at least protect them from any further damage. Art to Frames offers 15 glass choices ranging from UV and Non Glare glass, along with their award winning Tru-Vue glass; which are all designed to help protect your art and pictures for generations to come.Which is absolutely crucial when framing one of kind, irreplaceable art like this. Here are a few pictures of the finished product featuring those watercolor prints I had not previously shown you,now in there new Bamboo style Walnut Frames. You may have also noticed the lack of glare, which is also a big selling point to me. I have taken several close ups of my new custom frames.I think these are going to be a lovely feature in my Master Closet for the One Room Challenge next month. Even though I know they will not get seen a whole lot by others. I truly feel like that is the perfect home for them, and besides they are really just for my enjoyment anyways.I have believed that a home should tell your through design which is what makes it uniquely your own. Be sure to follow along starting October 3rd to see the entire project this season for the One Room Challenge and where these new prints will reside.
