$100 Room Challenge: Window Seat

Welcome to Week 3 of the $100 Room Challenge:Window Seat. We made a few changes from our original vision board, but love where we are headed. 

Hi everyone, welcome to $100 Room Challenge:Window Seat. If this is your first time seeing the $100 Room Challenge it is a bi-annual challenge sponsored by my friend Erin, from Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry. So, let me give you a little back ground on what the $100 Room Challenge is all about. This challenge takes place twice a year.  January and September is when Erin invites us to redo a room in our home using only $100. As you can see the premise of this challenge is real simple: one month, one space, and $100. If you want to know more about the $100 Room Challenge, check out Erin’s post to see how the concept was inspired, and it’s colossal growth since she decided to start it! This season I have decided to work on a Covered Patio, located just outside of the basement.

Truck Bench Cushions-

Okay so this week we worked on cushions for our existing Truck Bench, from TJ Parten of Parten’s Projects a local artisan.  I lucked out and was able to to use an older set seen below from some patio furniture that we recently got rid of the majority of the pieces this spring. I held on to the cushions thinking I might use them for cat beds, but they were actually the perfect size for this bench. (Free) in case you are keeping track. 

I ended up just cutting off the ties and I only had to divide one of the sets of cushions. Which was super easy, all I had to do was cut the fabric between the two cushions out and it created individual box cushions. This is such a great tip or trick especially if you shop the end of season summer clearance shops. Even if you do not need a double cushion you can divide a cushion like this to get two separate box cushions. So now the truck bench has a nice plush 3″ thick foam cushion for sitting which makes it super comfy like a bed swing. Which we have thought about converting if the legs ever rot out, just putting that idea out there for later. I decided while sitting on my newly created bench, that I really wanted a conversation area and would prefer a window seat as to a window box. Plus since the area does not get any sun or water I think a window box would just suffer. I remembered I had an old bench basket that used to be in our closet until one of cats, that shall remain nameless, peed on it. Yep it happens. Needless to say it no longer lives in my closet and was exiled to the basement for a rework or to be given away or burned, just kidding we were not going to burn it. It no longer had a cushion due to the incident, so I found an end of summer cushion on 75% off at Lowe’s while doing a little plant shopping and hoped it would work. Turns out the length was perfect but it was 2-3/4″ too wide, so it over hung the baskets.So I just cut the excess off the foam and folded the extra fabric back over the back side and tacked it up  with a few quick stitches to hold it in place.

I also found these great pots at Lowe’s the same day marked down to $8.85 and with our additional discount off with our Lowe’s credit card I walked off with them for $7.97 each, from a regular price of $19.99 each, which is a total steal. I did not love that they were black since that tends to burn up plants here in Georgia, so I fusion painted them with a pretty blue gray color I already had leftover from a previous project. 

I was also able to to score a ton of clearance plants for them as well.  The Lantana, Coleus, and Sweet Potato Vine’s were all marked $1 a pot. I snagged the pepper plants marked down to $3 and the Rosemary $2. I was able to recycle the Begonias from my front porch containers and I able to plant each beautiful urn for $8.00 each.To create the rest of the window seat I found these amazing shutters at my local Hobby Lobby during the 50% off wall hanging event. So I scooped them both up for $49.99. Which I admit that is half my budget but it is worth it considering what I am saving on everything else. Ron easily installed them directly onto the wall with deck screws, which I touched up with a little of the city loft white paint to make them disappear. The only adjustment we had to make was sliding the hardware around, since they were designed to be a one off decoration and not actual doors there hardware did not line up when I flipped one of them upside down. However it was an easy fix to unscrew and slide further down the door then fill the holes with a little dry wall mud.
