$100 Room Challenge: Basement Staircase

Yay, what a way to start the New Year off right! Are you ready for the $100 Room Challenge: Basement Staircase edition?

Hi everyone, welcome to the first week of my $100 Room Challenge: Basement Staircase renovation. If this is your first time seeing the $100 Room Challenge .let me  give you some background, it is a bi-annual challenge sponsored by my friend Erin, from Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry. What is  the $100 Room Challenge is all about? This challenge takes place twice a year, January and September. Erin invites us to redo a room in our home using a budget of only $100. As you can see the premise of this challenge is real simple: one month, one space, and $100. If you want to know more about the $100 Room Challenge, check out Erin’s post to see how the concept was inspired, and it’s colossal growth since she decided to start it!

Weeks at a Glance:

WEEK  1      WEEK 2     WEEK 3     WEEK 4    REVEAL

Here is a look back at  a few recaps of some of our previous $100 Room Challenges that we have done up to this point. Last season we work completely our Outdoor Terrace Patio. We were able to paint the ceiling, add string lighting and few other innovative DIY projects to dress the space up on a budget, with items we already had laying around our basement not being utilized.

$100 Room Challenge Reveal Outdoor Patio JENRON DESIGNSWe have also done 2 bathroom transformations for under $100 which is amazing to me. Our secret weapon of choice being paint and fun stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils. The first was a farmhouse tile stencil application in a tolite room along with a wainscot panel application see in our Game of Throne $100 Challenge Reveal. $100 Room Challenge Before:After Tolite Room JENRON DESIGNSWhile our second transformation included adding a coffered style ceiling application to dress up the space.  Along with a chinoiserie style stencil application to the walls  for a more formal look in this $100 Room Challenge for the Guest Bathroom, which doubles as a main level powder room. $100 Room Challenge Reveal Office Bathroom JENRON DESIGNSThis season we are excited to be launching on this first day of 202o and what better way to get  new year started off right than with a new project. Many of you may remember I had very lofty ideas last of starting to finish out my basement last January, which I can affirmatively say did not get done, at all. If there is one thing you need to know about me, it is I really hate to fail,  even if the goals were self inflicted, and I will do everything in my power not too. However this was a goal I set forth for us last New Years, and between other business commitments and timing this project once again got placed onto the back burner. Now this year I am pulling the trigger by starting with $100 Room Challenge: Basement Staircase and working my way forward into the space. So this is our before look at the steps and staircase to the basement.$100 Room Challenge Before StepsAs you can see these steps were left by our builder in hopes that we would just cover them up with carpeting. Since we do not have carpeting anywhere in our home we are not about to start here. However they are solid wood so they can be stained, it is just unfortunate that the over spray of trim paint coated the outer edges. It may take a little more work but in the end it will be worth it.  $100 Room Challenge Before Lower StepsAs for the landing, we still have 3 full boxes of extra, replacement, hardwood flooring we located in our attic leftover from building. It will match the rest of our hardwood floors throughout our home for the staircase. Then we can address what the basement floors will be further down the road since this is a discontinued colored.  $100 Room Challenge Before LandingWe also feel that this hallway is a little dark as well since it is so enclosed. So we are hoping to find the budget to add in chair rail high Wainscot panels to add more white trim to lighten up the lower half of the walls. We are very lucky to have some pieces left over from the ORC closet project that can be used along with the trim paint so that will save us some money. Plus we have 3 light fixtures that have been gathering dust on our “To Install Someday Somewhere Shelf ” which we are hope to replace the one and wire in two additional for extra lighting. Designer Tip: All good designers have a stash of fixturing and furniture. Just think about Joanna Gaines’ warehouse that she pulls from for her clients. The fixture we will use came to us over 5 years ago brand new and now they have found their place, so we will dust them off and install them.

The Proposed Schedule:

Week 1: The Plan

Week 2: Clean/Prep Steps Remove Over Spray Paint, Sand Treads, Putty Nail Holes/ Stain to Match upstairs steps

Week 3:Wainscot Chair Rail & Re Paint/ Touch up Walls Add New Light (fixtures we already own, gathering dust for 3 years for another project)

Week 4: Install matching Hardwood on Landing (Leftover boxes found in attic from Building)  Maybe Add Artwork?

Week 5: REVEAL
