Recycle Your Pumpkins

Recycle Your Pumpkins

Ask The Designer: I have been asked for seasonal tips on how to decorate on a budget for the holidays, to save money. So I am sharing how Recycle Your Pumpkins.

I wanted to share with you today how to Recycle Your Pumpkins. Sometimes the holidays just sneak up on you. Maybe it is mid October and you find your wallet getting stretched in ways you had not planned- costumes, parties, neighborhood events, and fall festivals. I find if you are working with a budget it is always good to shop your own home first. Maybe you have saved something back that can be up-cycled into a new piece for the holiday, or use in a a brand new way.  Today I would like to show how I recycled or upcycled some of my Fall Decorations from years ago.

This was my old front door wreath from our previous home. Please excuse the horribly grainy picture, as I had no idea I would be a blogging about this years later, LOL.  At the time this was beautiful wreath that adorned the front door of my home. So many people loved this wreath, I actually think I reproduced 7 or 8 wreaths just like this one for friends, family and customers. I kept this wreath into the following year, but by the third year, I wanted something new and fresh, you can probably tell that I tend to get very bored with holiday decor quickly, so, I disassembled the pumpkins and used them in following years in various vases, baskets, and bowls through out my home. This year I decided that I wanted to eliminate all the “traditional orange” from home and do only the farmhouse shabby chic white. This design element also included my dining table centerpiece. I decided that I would spray the very same pumpkins pictured from above with these 3 colors of spray paint, to create the shabby chic farmhouse style table. I taped off the stems and divided the pumpkins into two sets. I sprayed them all with a white primer paint, and allowed them dry. Then I sprayed half the pumpkins sage green and the other half a light taupe gray or “greige” color. Once dry, I removed the tape from the stem and hand painted them with a brown craft paint. As you can see the final product is fantastic. The old faded metallic orange pumpkins now looks brand new and carry a on trend modern farmhouse vibe. It always amazes me what can be done with a can of spray paint and a little imagination.

To complete the look I added my collection of milk glass as taper holders, a mossy green garland as the base and tucked in fresh cotton boils for that undeniable southern farmhouse feel. To see more on how I transitioned this table from Halloween to Thanksgiving without breaking the bank, check out Fall Table 3 Ways. 1. Thank you you are just the sweetest!!! I did clean them with bleach water and apply a store bought pumpkin sealer for carved pumpkins, then of course I used white spray paint for the snow pumpkins. They did start to get a little mushy and cracking by the December, but their longevity really surprised me too!!!

  2. Southern Charm
