Installing A Vanity Light Fixture

One Room Challenge: Jack & Jill Guest Bath Week 6

Week 6, here we come, and we are super glad we are almost done, or are we? This week we are installing a vanity light fixture over  both of the Jack and Jill sinks. While it took us a while to finally decided on style we that would give us ample light in this space, we are very happy with the final product selection.

Just to recap this happens twice a year, April/ October, the designers only have six weeks, from start to finish in order to complete a full room transformation.  Each week the guest designer’s will link their progress to the ORC host page Calling It Home , and share their room’s progress. The best part you will be able to follow along with JENRON DESIGNS and all the participants progress just by clicking the ORC. This season for the first time ever, the ORC has extended the REVEAL date to seven weeks, to help accommodate  our fellow designers in Texas, Florida and California effected by all horrific the hurricanes and fires (updated in WEEK 4). So now the final completion date and big reveal of our Jack and Jill Guest Bathroom makeover will be on Thursday, Nov. 16th!

Lights:

Now that the paint is done and dried I am ready to tackle those awful light fixtures that I have been complaining about since day one. Here’s is that incredibly ugly “boob” light in the toilet room. I should clarify, these are actually called dome lights or canopy lights.  However, I think they look like boobs, therefore I have called them boob lights since back in college, LOL, and my professor just loved that.

As you can see by this picture the quality of light provided by this fixture is horrible. We currently have the highest wattage bulb available for these lights and the dome has sadly yellowed after two years.  The light quality is very yellow and dim, which will be even worse in the shower after we add a shower curtain.

For this location we decided a Halo SLD LED Recessed down light would be the best direction to go. It is a simple fixture that gives off a clean pure warm light, and will illuminate the entire toilet room. It is such a simple conversion, I am really shocked more people are not installing them throughout there homes.

Next up…… the vanity lights, which is something I have been looking forward to since the beginning of this project. We chose the Millennium Neo Industrial Light from Bellacore a proud sponsor for the ORC challenge.

CHECKING THE Lights JENRON DESIGNS

As you can see my quality control inspectors leaped into action the minute that these items were received. Clearly they were hard at work to make sure that these boxes were completely up to snuff. Honestly, with out these guys I am not sure how I got this project done.I was so excited to have these lights up, until they were installed. As you can see above the covers which make the light fixture look cool causes a dark shadowy spot above the vanity.

Since all the light is directed down, the florescent bulb that came with this fixture was not going to work. So my husband suggested we purchase a higher lumen output warm LED dimmable bulb.

Designer note: I personally prefer the Warm LED lights, they create a more natural light with less of that weird blue/green tone which makes you home feel too space aged, plus fluorescent light is not a very flattering light on skin either, it makes everyone look sickly.

PROPER LightIing for sinks JENRON DESIGNSAs you can see the new bulbs have made a world of difference. Honestly it was so bright I actually decided that we should add a dimmer switch for our guests, just incase they would want a lower more ambient light.Adding a dimmer JENRON DESIGNS

DIY BARNWOOD ROBE HOOKS:

Our last project, that was a last minute decision, was the addition of robe hooks.  This space just needed something to go on the wall and I did not have anything particularly planned for it. Barnwood Robe Rack DIY JENRON DESIGNSImagine my excitement when I found this leftover piece of one hundred year old barn wood! It was in the basement, left over from our Rustic Sunday Brunch Sign, and was exactly the right size! I think we trimmed 1/4″ off to even it up and bam it was done.

I think my favorite part of this piece is that you can still see the ordinal nails that are bent over into the wood. My dear sweet husband offered to pull them out, but I just loved there rustic charm. I felt like they match these rustic metal wall hooks we online at My Gift they came in set of 6 for $12 and free shipping with Amazon Prime, which is a total deal and now I 4 left over to use somewhere else, maybe the garage?

Rounding out week 6, all that is left is staging in the rest of the finishing touches. Honestly, I could be finished with the entire project right now, but I am having to stretch out the rest of the project to keep it at the new  7 week mark. I think I under challenged myself, and played if safe this round since I did not know how my husband’s shoulder recovery was going to go. Obviously, he is almost completely healed and we are making progress faster than I had intended. Hey better to underpromise and over deliver, as I always say.  Anyways, almost there, next stop the BIG REVEAL! Yay, are you as excited as I am? Let’s take a look back at our to do list below.
