Creating a Hidden Pet Room

Creating a Hidden Pet Room

Creating a Hidden Pet Room in my English linen closet, for my cats was a complete no brainer for our home.

Here is my easy tutorial on Creating a Hidden Pet Room in my English style linen closet. I find living with animals and keeping a home clean, can be challenging. Let’s face it we love them, but they are messy, and they can trash your house in seconds. This is what prompted us to create a pet room for my cats. This rooms has many uses, we house their litter box, and supplies; along with their complete water and food station, which keeps my house cleaner overall. In building our home, we had the option to create a larger laundry room by closing in the second story of our foyer. Our previous laundry room was tiny, so we immediately chose to implement this option. This change left us with a large “English Linen Closet”. Prior to moving to our new home, we predetermined that this area would make a great pet room for our cats. Above is a before picture of the room as the builder described English linen closet. I know, not many shelves for a “linen closet”, I thought the same thing, LOL.

The first thing we did was add easy to clean linoleum floors and an exhaust fan. The exhaust fan vents any smells from the litter box, directly out of my home. Honestly, this might be the single most important thing we did. If you have cats, you know that the litter box smell can truly ruin your home, and once that smell sinks in there is no getting rid of it.The next important thing we did was painted the entire room with a scrubbable satin finish paint. This will help to seal the drywall and preventing even more odors from getting trapped in the walls, plus it is easy to clean in case of any accidents. Finally we added a large utilitarian light fixture, nothing fancy it’s mainly for us to see, to get the room cleaned properly. The next big thing we did was cut a cat door through the wall into our Master bedroom wall and through the hall door. Why did we cut a hole in our wall? Well, we host a lot gatherings and parties which equals a lot of guests. This room set up will allow me to lock my fur babies in our master bedroom during gatherings, which they actually prefer since they do not care for loud noises or large crowds of people. This also allows them access to their food, water and liter box, but without the fear of a guest accidentally letting them out into the great beyond of the wilderness that is our backyard. The other pet door located on the hallway door gives us the ability to shut our bedroom door when we have overnight guests. This grants our cats the ability to come and go as they please, which will save your door frames, doors and carpet, since they can be quite destructive when confined to one area against their will.So check this out, I came up with idea all on my own! JENRON DESIGNS developed this prototype for a Ventilated Shelf Cover (VSC). A DIY rig to make your pet room aesthetically pleasing, and on a shoestring budget. This process can be used on any wire shelving. We took teacup hooks to the back of some barn wood or shiplap and used felt pads for spacers as you can see above. You literally hang the board right on the front of the wire rack. The finished product was this:We created a facia board to cover the universally ugly wire rack, (we also did they same process for a DIY Linen Closet upgrade too.) Then spray painted the support arms black to emulate iron. This process would be great for any wire rack that you would not use for hanging clothes. So try it in a linen closet, pantry, garage storage area or pet room. We also spray painted the wood letters of Meow, and popped them into the wall with a nail gun.

Designer Tip: A wire rack allows light to pass through the to the floor, which keep the room brighter. Unlike with a solid wood shelving, that would block the light flow and make the room seem smaller and darker. We added a trackless litter mat, to cut down on liter leaving the room on their feet. I used pretty baskets to conceal small odd and ends like kitty treat bags, lysol wipe, and air freshener. Then decided to add in all my accumulated kitty art, hey, makes great decorations. We made a small wall hook from barn wood hold the litter scoop, bag holder and our scooper stool. I found these cute iron hooks at the straw market in Charleston, and added them to shiplap boards. You know how I love a theme! We also have a this great tin for there food since we feed them a custom blend of dry foods. Ever since my oldest Maine Coon developed hyperthyroidism, I decided to change the basic Iams dry food I had feed them for years to a high protein based food by EVO, which was discontinued. Now I use Instinct and I mix it with a Fromm’s Game Bird, organic food for just a little bit of carb.  Since this is a custom blend I have to mix each time into a tin to keep it fresh. I got this one from Ballards but they do not carry it any longer so I will list a few of my second choices at the bottom. We also allow our cats to free feed so these gravity feeds are the best. They also love running water so we invested in a fountain water bowl with a filter as well and retired the large gravity water bowls to the screened porches since it stays so hot here in Georgia.  Share this idea with your cat loving friends, they will thank you for it, and sign up for monthly newsletters and tell a friend about us too!

  2. Emma

Such a fantastic idea to keep all the smelly, messy parts of owning pets out of the way – And the bonus is that you can just close the door when you want it to look neat!

  3. Jodie Whitham

What a fab idea! We often joke in our house that one dog has her own room. We have a spare room and she chooses to sleep in it overnight lol x

  4. eazynazy

awww this is so cuteee.I totally love it

  5. Chrinstine

How interesting, you are truly talented and have a great ability to make something out of nothing. I am loving following your post and seeing all the creative things that you come up with, keep up the good work. xoxoxox

  6. That is so cool. I have never thought about doing something like that but our cat Mittens would love something like this.

  7. This is such a cute idea! It is such a great thing to do, if you have the extra space!

  8. Exactly!!! I love it when I have guests that are amazed I have 5 cats. I know my work is done once they say ” Really? Usually you smell cats.” I just smile sweetly and say “that was the entire goal for creating this room.”

  9. That is funny!!! Yes, our 5 cats each chose a separate room in the house to take up residence in. However the siblings (Brother & Sister) always pick the twin guest room I guess they like each others company, but they have their own beds…..hahahaha

  10. Thank you with pets it is a must to keep the house clean.

  11. Yes I think it is a real win win for our house. It gives them their own space and keeps the messy parts out of site 🙂

  12. We actually implemented this same concept in our first starter home as well, and we had no extra space. We utilized a under the staircase closet, vented an exhaust fan into our garage. It was not perfect but it still did the trick. I would even consider an extra closet on a exterior wall, maybe in a office area. As long as you can add the exhaust fan that is what removes odors from your home.

  13. Love this! My fiance and I bought our kitty a “tree house” and it’s HUGE. It’s such an eye-sore, but she loves it so much that we just deal with it. We will have to consider a “pet room” for our next place.

  14. Good post. I learn something new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon everyday. It will always be useful to read articles from other writers and practice something from other websites.

  20. Hermine Gantt

I would have never thought about doing this for a pet. Great idea but I have dogs, not sure they would fit through the doors.

  21. Hermine you can get bigger doors, but keep in mind that means a bigger hole in the wall. If your pups are a larger breed dogs like a labs, retrievers or even great danes you may be correct in not applying this technique to your space.

  22. Phillis Wardy

  36. Audra Capellan

Reading your pet room story made me think of creating a new home for her pet, although it will not be an entire room, I agree that pets need their own space too.

  37. Amanda Wider

I have several pets and this concept is a wonderful solution to all my stinky problems. An indoor liter box is the most horrific thing I have ever dealt with, and I feel like one of those Fabreeze commercials every time I walk in my guest bathroom. Unfortunately I am not nose blind. So I feel the exhaust fan installation, and it constantly running to remove odors is brilliant.

  38. Sherrill Haschke

I believe this is a great idea to contain the mess indoor pets create. I have two small dogs and this would be great for them too! Great blog post.

  39. Clinton G.

Wow Whoa Incredible Amazing! This blog has great ideas and looks great too. Excellent Wonderful Great Outstanding Superb!

You could definitely see your expertise in the work you write. The world hopes for more passionate writers like you who are not afraid to say how they believe. You love your cats, you made them a room, instead of using a makeshift bathroom or sending them outside. Always follow your big feline loving heart. Meow

  50. Saul Riscen

Thanks for your article. I appreciate seeing pet renovations to a space, to make living with them easier. I love all my pets but like you said they can be very messy sometimes.

  51. Erin McGregor

I really love all the attention to detail you put into this room. Even if it just for your pets, the container and hooks are adorable. Good job!

  52. Raven Smallwood

I like this idea for smaller pets like dogs and cats. I have a pet pig, do you think it will work too? I guess if the door is big enough for a large dog old wilber would also fit. I may give it a go.

  53. Pappa Livingstein

Well you are on to something here. You could even make it a dog grooming station if you add some plumbing.

  54. elle mart

Oh how cute is this and whole room for your fuzzies. What a fantastic idea! I am so copying you, so smart!

  55. Mai Tang

Pet rooms are essential in keeping your home clean I wish more people knew about this. We just bough a home that looked like live stock lived in the basement.

  58. Ouzu Daybyoo

Good idea for any pets to keep your home clean. The linoleum is a really good idea to clean up spills and messes.

  59. Orignial Olivia

Where have you been all my life? This is a great idea! I am so sick of tripping over the food dishes in my kitchen, I could just puke! Totally doing this!

  60. A Zute

Well that is a good idea. I guess it could be used for small dogs too just add puppy pads.

  61. Kristian Zissler

I wish to express some thanks to this writer just for rescuing me from a potential horrible cat box situation. Your primary expertise and kindness in touching all areas was precious. Thank you so much for your expert advice and help. I will not hesitate to recommend the blog to anybody who needs to have direction on this problem.

  65. Darci Blackshear

Do you have a a lot of cats? I would assume you do to make them a room. I love pets it seem like we have a zoo right now with fish, cat, dog, rabbit oh and a hamster. I draw the line at snakes…..no snakes in the house.

  66. Rosemary | A Hint of Rosemary

Hey, thanks for the post. Thanks Again. Will read on…

  67. Merci MarSolais

How sweet, I really like this idea a lot. We have several kitties and the liter box as you know is always a problem. I hate tripping over it in my bathroom. Adding the exhaust fan is a very viable solution to the smell issue too! Thanks for sharing.

  68. Portia's Girl

I love animals too, and about a dozen pets myself. I find this article to be very insightful and the perfect way to keep the pet mess at bay. You have some really great ideas and I am so happy to have stumbled upon your lovely blog.

  69. Mink

I love those sweet little iron wall hooks they are absolutely perfect for this room. Also I really like the barn wood face out on the wire rack, that is just genius.

  70. Oropeza

This is such good idea, I have two small Yorkies and I think they would still love this idea too. We use the Wee Wee patch puppy grass stations for indoor use. This would keep them out of the way and the door would let them come and go as they please.

  71. major nelson

The conception of a pet room is sheer brilliance. I have 2 dogs and a cat, let me tell you trying to keep the dogs from eating out of the liter box is a struggle. The room would be helpful even if it is just a closet for kitty.

  72. Ree D

Meow! How cute is that? I live on a farm and you would not believe what comes in my house! I love this idea of a pet room, although I would have to make mine in a mudroom area as the pigs, and goats are not allowed in to the living quarters of our home.

  73. Our first cat room was a closet under the stairs…just like Harry Potter LOL. As long as you can run a exhaust fan to the outside, which make a difference in the smell, I say do it!!!

  74. Veronica Talentino

I am secretly a crazy cat lady. I feel like this is a safe environment to release that information. Thank you addressing the mess and liter box issues of feline ownership. Your room is adorable and you have thought of every possible need for your fuzzy friends. I look forward to reading more of you thoughtful posts.

  75. Katie Zissler

I love your meows!! This is a really good idea for them, I know my liter box causes enormous problems in our home. The kids play in it…. the dog eats it…. the dogs breath smells now….. ugh Calgon take me away, to your house!!!!! LOL

  76. Cathie Applewhite

I love that you made your sweet little fur babies a room. They deserve it, such sweet kitties.

  77. Tabatha Bosen

You have some unexpected ideas here at your blog. I would have never thought to do this in my home, but it is brilliant. Just like the Mini Bar Armoire and the Kitchen Island, these are all brilliant, just brilliant. Keep up that good work, your hard work will pay off big time very soon!

  78. We actually built our home so we knew that was a hollow wall and empty space. I always recommend while building take a lot of pictures of wall innards to reference back to later, which we did.

  79. Home At Mimi's

I’m ecstatic, about this space! Now I can Max & Mimi’s liter box out of a guest bathroom. I have a large empty hall closet that will work, I can exhaust it to my garage through the wall according to my husband. This is purrrrrfect thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  80. Rosie Donnally

I have 3 kitty kitty’s and they would love a space like this. How did you know you could cut a hole in the wall? That is the only dicey part for me. Other than that this project is meownificent!

  81. Becca Lewis

This is such a wonderful idea for pet owners. I can tell you put a lot of thought into it, for you home. Other can and should really take note from your observations and solutions to make their homes more pets friendly. I can not tell you how often I go into pet owners homes and it smells awful and dirty. You have so much great information to share with the world I hope your site becomes a viral overnight sensation!

  82. Leslie Brackin

I have 3 fur friends that live in my home. This idea would be the best thing for them and me. I almost made them outdoor kitties but I live near a highway so that’s a no go. The liter box always seem to be the problem with cats, thanks for a do able solution.

  83. Tindle Holdeman

I am a pet sitter and this is a great idea. I will refer some of my clients to you site for inspiration.

  84. Parker Strain

I have two cats and they are relatively clean but I admit it would be nice to hide that dreaded liter box from site. Love the exhaust fan idea to remove the odors too.

  85. Cassie Bainbridge

I have two small dogs do you think this idea would work for them? The only thing I worry about is the door. They are a little weird about things like that, so cutting a hole in the wall or door worries me a lot. Any advice?

  86. Racheal Curdy

I have 4 kitties and I must say that this is the perfect liter box solution. Thank you for sharing.

  87. Nikki

From my zoo to yours: This is a great idea! The ability to hid all the ugly food dishes and liter boxes is such a great idea for a pet friendly home.

  88. I see your point, and I have a cat that would not use a flap door, but she will go through the open door.

  89. Sabrina Cummingham

I have several pets and this solution is perfect for my home. I plan to work on it this weekend so its done before the holiday. Thank you for the inspiration on this long over due project.

  90. How many cats do you have? That is a very big room for them. Do they actually stay in there? I was thinking this idea might work for my crate trained dog. Thoughts?

  91. Growing Up Grates

This idea is perfect for a multi cat home. I can’t believe I didn’t think of it myself. Your ideas are so perfect for the average pet owner and completely obtainable. Thanks for sharing, I feel a project in my future.

  92. Harvest Jabiro

Good idea, especially the exhaust fan to cut the smell. That is the only part I do no like about owning cats, the liter box. I wish those toilet trainers actually worked. Love you blog keep up the great posts.

  93. I have 5 so I guess that officially makes me a crazy cat lady…LOL 🙂 They do not stay in the room, its only for food, water and liter boxes. I think the concept would work just fine for crate trained dogs too, however I am a softy so I would probably add a TV for entertainment while they are crated.

  94. Thelma Silliman

I will see if my grandson can add in a pet door for me. It seems like a very easy solution and way to keep the liter box and bay. I really love you blog you have creative ideas and your posts are quite unique. Hard work pays off, keep up the hard work.

  95. Ana Bardsley

Your design ability to create something out of nothing amazes me. This room is a stroke of genius and fixes all the problem presented by owning pets. I can’t wait to see what other knowledge you can bestow upon us. Love you blog I am a big fan.

  96. L. Sumrow

Your blog is one I can seem to to stop reading. It is literally chocked full of cutting edge fresh design ideas. This pet room is a glorious solution to a age old problem. Keep up the good work, you are going places.

  97. Mckenna Dunagin

As a mommy to 7 fur babies this will make my life complete. I started as a foster home, that couldn’t give them up and now 7 felines later the liter box is a HUGE challenge. I must follow your lead and get hose concrete mixing tubs that seems like the way to go. Thank you so much for sharing this life changing idea.

  98. Libby Talks

4 FELINES and counting, this is the purrfect solution for a multi cat home. Thank you so much for sharing, since there it not a lot of information on this type of home renovation. I promise all the pet lovers out here, truly appreciate your wisdom!

  99. Dana Somerfield

You really love your pets and it shows with length of work you put into creating them a space. This says a lot to me about your heart and spirit. We are kindred in that realm, go forth a create even more beauty my sister.

  100. Lonnie Brassfield

We are big animal lovers here at the farm. I love the way you created a pet room for your home. We are lucky most of cats are farm cats so they are indoor/outdoor, but this is still a good idea for people in more urban situations. We might have to make a pig or chick room here ha ha ha!

  101. Lessons for Lulo

Great post and spectacular idea. I have so many pets this would be a god send for our household. Thanks for posting, you have a great blog and its growing quickly.

  102. Bev Hildbrand

As a mommy to 3 children, 2 cats, 3 dogs and a lizard name Thumbkin, I am here to say I need a big room with multiple cages. Yes that’s right, I need a zoo. Seriously, this is a good idea for the cats, since the dogs seem to love the get into the uncleaned liter box, however the they are done the box is cleaner. Gross I know…..I am leaving now

  103. Tess Caccavale

Meowza, this is quite the creation for your lucky kitties. I will consider building something similar for my guys as soon as I get to a non rental home. They frown upon cutting holes in walls and such in rentals you know.

  104. Jana Brichard

I can’t believe I stumbled upon such a great post. I just love that app, I find the neatest things like you pet room. I do not have this much space but my take away is to create a defined pet space for my furry friends.

  105. Discus Girl

Oh you have always loved animals, remember that turtle that pooped in your gym bag? I thought I would never hear the end of that! Great blog I have enjoyed reading and catching up on where your guys are now.

  106. green mantis

I am a animal lover too. I really like this post and the room you made for you pets. It turned out so good. Maybe the cuteness of this room will promote more pet adoptions 🙂

  107. Margie Penfield

Enjoying your blog, so happy you found a way to get rid on liter box oder. That is the worst part of having cats. That and they claw everything up. As you can tell I might have a few of my own.

  108. LeighAnn Wyrick

Such a great idea, I have a small coat closet under the stairs that might work. You have inspired me to try and that’s a good thing.

  109. Lyle Croker

I was searching for cat liter box options and I found this post. I love that you use industrial sized boxes, that is awesome. How often do you change them? And for how many cats?

  110. Killian Martin

I have two large dogs and while I will not be cutting a hole in my wall, I do like the idea of giving them a space for there food and water bowls. I have a large mudroom that lead to the garage which I am thinking about converting.

  111. Kayla

Your home design concepts are like no other I have ever seen. You make it cool to live in your home and don’t tout your as only a show home space. I literally feel like I walk in, put my feet up, and enjoy your space. Thank for you not being another stagnant fluff home, I love that your live real like real people.

  112. Thanks Lyle! We try to scoop once a day, but every other day for sure. It takes 35 lbs of cat liter per box (which is a concrete mixing tub form Home Depot) every 3-4 weeks, since we scoop regularly. We currently have 5 cats.

  113. Judith, I found them in an iron booth at the Straw Market in Charleston S.C. I imagine they are order-able online I will have to see if I can find them and let you know. Thanks for stopping in.

  114. Judean

I am a crazy cat lady, and this is the puuuuuurfect project for me. Thank you so much for giving me a glimpse into your kitties world, with all the modern conveniences every cat mommy needs. By the way those hooks on the wall have my heart. May I inquire where you got them? TIA

  115. the lone wolf

What a great idea, it cuts the smell and mess from liter tracking! I gotta keep an eye on you, since your ideas are so good. following

  116. Piper Somers

Great idea for all pets. Thanks for sharing.

  117. Eliis

I have been brainstorming on how to keep kitties liter box from scenting my entire home. I believe you have found my solution. You said you have 5 cats, and NO Smell? I’m sold!

  118. Callie Haney

If I didn’t live in an apartment I would so do this. My kitty box in the bathroom has got to go! I am always tracking liter around and so is she. I guess I just need a bigger space.

  119. Railene Gutman

This is a very unique idea, I can not say I have seen too many pet rooms, but it makes a lot of sense. Your pet is with you more than any other person on the planet, day in and day out. So they deserve a room too!

  121. bunnytime

We have several bunny’s that we have to keep separated for obvious reasons. The exhaust fan seems like a sound idea to get rid of pet smells, thank for the idea.

  122. Ryland Buckovitch

I have several pets that need better containment. Not the actual pets, all the pet stuff. This seems to be an option I could try, thanks.

  128. Hi Cory have you pups ever used a doggie door? If not it could prove to be challenging. I have one cat that will not use a door with the flap, so I had to alter an door and let it stand wide open, with out the flap.

  129. Lonnie D

This room caught my eye on Pinterest and I had to click over to see what it was about. Great idea for pet owners. I love the MEOW wallet you created too, very clever.

This would be a perfect additional to our new home, we have several pets and they really need a space for liters and food. We also have a Roomba that keeps knocking over the water bowl which makes a mess, so I am really thinking a extra walking closet we have might be the solution. Great idea!

  163. Ana I am so glad this idea will work for your family! Funny story we have a Roomba too, and 4 cats, so I feel your pain. It occasionally runs through a myriad of stuff around our house, water being one of the easier things we have had to clean up……. but at least my home is vacuumed regularly, and for that I am grateful. LOL.
